For all the talk about digital transformation, financial institutions are still stuck in an outdated truth: we collect oceans of data but struggle to turn it into business value. We’re chasing more dashboards, more metrics, more lakes and warehouses and yet the fundamental flow of data through our organizations remains slow, siloed, and often untrustworthy.
The problem isn’t how much data we have. It’s how we process it.
If the banking industry wants to innovate whether through AI, automation, or faster regulatory response we must stop treating data as a byproduct and start designing it as a product. That shift in mindset is the key to unlocking real efficiency, insight, and trust.
Operations Data bloat has quietly become a barrier to progress. Many financial institutions are dealing with duplicative pipelines, inconsistent formats, and teams spending more time cleaning and validating than analyzing. Analysts often joke that 80% of the work is data wrangling but when that becomes the reality across teams, it’s not just inefficiency; it’s a strategic risk.
We’ve invested millions in infrastructure, yet internal users still struggle to find reliable sources.Regulatory reporting cycles are drawn out due to reconciliation delays. Business decisions stall while teams cross-check spreadsheets against legacy systems. This is the friction that kills innovation at scale.
Traditional enterprise data models rooted in centralized ownership and IT-led governance can’t keep pace with the speed and diversity of today’s use cases. Compliance, risk, customer experience, and fraud prevention all demand real-time, fit-for-purpose data. But the “one lake fits all” approach doesn’t deliver that. It slows us down.
Data teams, meanwhile, are expected to act like internal service desks processing tickets ,chasing metadata, enforcing policies. But if accountability is unclear and feedback loops are slow, the gap between business users and engineers widens.
What’s needed isn’t just more tooling, it's smarter data design. This starts with treating data as a product: built with a clear purpose, well-documented, easy to access, and constantly maintained. Forward-thinking financial firms are starting to adopt domain-oriented data ownership, a concept borrowed from software engineering. This means giving business-aligned teams the autonomy (and responsibility) to own, publish, and manage their own trusted datasets, while adhering to common standards.
Imagine if your risk team managed their own clean, validated "risk exposure" data product that others could reliably consume. Or if regulatory reports were generated off version-controlled, traceable datasets with built-in quality checks. That’s not just governance that’s operational excellence.
One of the myths slowing us down is that more governance equals more control. In reality, lean governance, embedded into the data development lifecycle, produces better compliance and faster outcomes. Metadata tracking, lineage mapping, and automated validation can and should be part of every pipeline not layered on later.
Instead of static policies in PDFs, banks need living frameworks that adapt to changing requirements, are developer-friendly, and empower teams rather than constrain them.
There’s growing excitement around using AI to unlock new value from bank data from generative agents to fraud detection to real-time advisory. But here’s the catch: if your pipelines are brittle and your data is untrusted, AI models will amplify the noise, not the insight.
Before we go all in on AI-driven strategies, we need to ensure the fundamentals are solid:consistent schemas, traceable lineage, and quality monitoring. Otherwise, we risk making automated decisions based on flawed inputs, a dangerous proposition in a regulated industry.
We’ve measured success for too long by how many reports we publish or how many datasources we connect. But in today’s environment, those are vanity metrics.
What truly matters now:
● How long does it take to get from question to insight?
● How many people trust the numbers they see?
● How much of our data is actually used and by whom?
If the answers to these are unclear or disappointing, the solution isn’t more tools, it's fixing the flow.
To move forward, banks must start acting like builders, not archivists. That means empowering cross-functional data teams, investing in composable architecture, and putting the user experience of internal users just as much as external ones at the center of our design choices
.Innovation isn’t blocked by lack of data. It’s blocked by the friction in how we work with data.
If we fix the flow, reduce the latency between creation and consumption, ensure quality from the start, and align architecture with real-world business needs we can unlock a new era of agility and intelligence in banking. But that will only happen if we stop focusing on how much data we store and start optimizing how we move it.
